GORKA IZAGIRRE winery contributes to the spread of Biscay wines by preserving and cultivating local grape varietals to create award winning white wines recognized around the world.
Get to know our roots ...
Making txakoli white wine was once a common tradition in early farm houses or caserios of the Basque Country. In 2005, our family founders wanted to bring back this wine making tradition in Biscay. Michelin Star Chef Eneko Atxa and his uncle Gorka Izagirre envisioned a project that would bring together the region’s best gastronomy and preserve the local grape varietals. Their goal was to apply modern technology and sustainable techniques while staying true to tradition and roots.
Today Gorka’s son and oenologist José Ramón Calvo continue to build on that dream by creating great white wines that bring out the best characteristics of our autochthonous grapes, preserving local grape varietals and Basque txakoli tradition and culture so that it can be shared with the world.
